Legal and policies

BreakAtlas publishes numbers that people use to decide whether to paddle out. That deserves a full set of policies rather than a single line in a footer. Everything is here, written to be read.

If you read one page, read the safety disclaimer. Surf and beach conditions change faster than any website updates. When the water looks different from the numbers, the water is right — and a lifeguard beats both.

The policies

  • Legal Notice

The company behind BreakAtlas, its address, and the person answerable for what is published here.

  • Privacy Policy

What is collected, what is not, and the rights you have under US state privacy law, the GDPR and Swiss law.

  • Cookies

One entry in your browser’s local storage, set when you switch to dark mode. Everything else is listed here too.

  • Terms of Use

What you may do with the pages and the data, what we promise, and the limits of that promise.

  • Safety Disclaimer

The most important page here. Ocean conditions kill people, and a website is a poor substitute for a lifeguard.

  • Advertising & Affiliates

How BreakAtlas is paid for, how paid links are marked, and what that money is never allowed to change.

  • Copyright & DMCA

What is public domain, what is ours, and how a rights holder or a cam operator gets something removed.

  • Accessibility

The standard this site is built to, what is checked automatically on every build, and what is still open.

Who is behind this

  • About

Who builds BreakAtlas, and the four rules the data follows.

  • Contact

Corrections, wrong station mappings, cam operators, press and legal notices.

The short version

  1. The data is public. Buoy, tide, model and forecast readings come from US federal agencies and carry no copyright. Take them, and name the agency.
  2. The pages are ours. Wording, layout, code and the way spots are matched to stations belong to Honeygoat GmbH.
  3. We collect close to nothing. No account, no tracking cookie, no analytics script. One local-storage entry remembers dark mode.
  4. Money never moves a number. Where BreakAtlas earns a commission, the link says so — and no reading, rating or safety line changes because of it.
  5. Nothing here is a safety guarantee. Conditions kill people. This site describes them; it does not make them safe.
