Caught in a rip current

The response that gets people out is the opposite of the instinctive one. It is worth knowing before you need it, because there is no time to work it out in the water.

If someone is in trouble in the water, call 911 and alert a lifeguard. Do not swim out after them. People drown attempting rescues far more often than the person they went in for.

The sequence

  1. Keep your head above water and stay calm Easy to write, hard to do, and it decides the rest. The current is carrying you along the surface, away from the beach — it is taking you somewhere, and it will run out of strength. Panic burns the energy you need to swim once it does.
  2. Swim parallel to the shore Along the beach, across the flow. Rip currents are narrow — often 10 to 30 metres wide — so a short distance sideways takes you out of the channel entirely, while the same effort spent swimming towards the beach gains almost nothing.
  3. Angle back in once the pull releases When you can feel yourself moving with the waves again rather than against them, head for the beach on a diagonal that keeps you clear of the channel you just left.
  4. Float and signal if you cannot swim clear Tread water or roll onto your back and float. Raise one arm and call out. Floating costs almost nothing and buys the time a lifeguard needs — and beyond the breakers the current spreads out and lets go.

Why swimming straight for the beach fails

A rip current commonly runs at 1 to 2 feet per second, and the strongest exceed 8 feet per second — faster than an Olympic sprinter swims. Turning to face the beach means racing that flow at full effort in deep water.

Strong swimmers are at particular risk here, because they can sustain the attempt long enough to reach genuine exhaustion far from shore. The water is what drowns people in a rip current, but exhaustion is usually what gets them there. Swimming across the current turns a race you lose into a short crossing you win.

What the current is actually doing

Picture a narrow lane of water leaving the beach through a gap in the sandbar, running out through the surf, and then fanning out and dying beyond the breakers. You are on the surface of that lane, moving seaward with it.

Two consequences follow. First, you have time — the flow ends, usually within 50 to 100 metres of shore, and a floating swimmer is still a swimmer when it does. Second, sideways is short: the lane has edges, and they are close. Both facts point at the same response.

A rip current does not hold you under. If you have read otherwise, the word you met was probably undertow, and it describes something different.

If you see someone else caught

Call 911 and alert a lifeguard before anything else. Then shout the instructions to the swimmer and throw them anything that floats — a bodyboard, a cooler lid, a ring buoy.

Swimming out to help is how a single emergency becomes two. Would-be rescuers make up a substantial share of rip current deaths in the United States, and in many of those cases the person they went in for came back alive. A parent going in after a child is the pattern that repeats most often.

If you go in regardless, take flotation with you. Something that floats turns a rescue attempt into a delivery, and gives both of you a chance to wait for help.

What should you do if caught in a rip current?

Stay calm and keep your head above water. Swim parallel to the shore to get out of the narrow band of current, then angle back towards the beach once the pull has released you. If swimming is beyond you, float or tread water and raise an arm to signal for help — the current runs out of energy past the breakers, and floating keeps you alive until it does.

Why should you not swim straight back to shore?

A rip current commonly runs faster than a person can swim, so swimming directly against it means working at full effort while the water still carries you seaward. Exhaustion, not the current itself, is what drowns people. Swimming across the current instead means covering only the width of the channel, which is often just 10 to 30 metres.

Will a rip current pull me underwater?

No. A rip current is a horizontal flow along the surface, carrying you away from the beach. It does not pull you down. The danger comes from being taken further out than you can swim back from, and from panic and exhaustion in deep water.

How far out does a rip current go?

Most dissipate just beyond the line of breaking waves, often within 50 to 100 metres of shore. Some extend further. Once past the breakers the flow spreads out and weakens, which is why a swimmer who floats rather than fights usually finds the pull ends.

What if I see someone else caught in a rip current?

Call 911 and alert a lifeguard immediately, and shout the instructions to the swimmer — swim parallel to shore, or float. Throw anything that floats. Entering the water yourself is how many rip current fatalities happen: would-be rescuers drown at a high rate, often while the original swimmer survives.
